Shelbee Mares loves being the 2002
Spring Arts poster artist
By Rick Roniancito
When Shelbee Mares, 35, works in her Talpa studio, she doesn't mind
a little company, especially when it's her daughter, Hallie, 5.
As both happily painted away side-by-side on a warm afternoon last week,
Shelbee Mares reflected on how her fathers comment "The only real
movies are westerns" - helped set her on a path to Taos, where
she was named this year's Spring Arts Festival poster artist.
Her work, titled "Soprender," can be seen hanging in the lobby
of the Taos County Chamber of Cornmerce, located on the corner of Paseo
del Pueblo Sur and Pasco del Canon.
Originally from Maine, where her folks owned an interior- design firm,
Mares said when she came to Taos for the first time she only got as
far as the "horseshoe" overlook south of Ranchos before she
and a friend had to turn around and head back to Albuquerque. But it
was that tiny glimpse that made her want to return.
Eventually, she met Art Mares while still in Albuquerque and the two
hit it off. Now, her husband, Art has become a longtime Taos businessman.
Slielbee Mares primarily specializes now in botanicals, although in
the past she's also done a number of architectural studies as well.
Her work can be seen at Michael McCormick Gallery, just off Taos Plaza.
The annual Taos Spring Arts Festival takes place here May 3-19, during
which special events, an outdoor arts and crafts fair and a number of
gallery openings are planned.
Mares' work was selected by a panel Of jurors made up of Taos Spring
Arts Committee members. While the jury selected a work to appear on
Spring Arts promotional posters, they also took time to select a work
for the annual Taos Arts Festival, which takes place in the fall. The
jury has selected "La Morada de Don Fernando" by long time
Taos painter, Ed Sandoval.
The fall event takes place Sept. 20 through Oct. 7 and is highliglhted
by the annual Taos Invites Taos and Taos Open art exhibitions, along
with numerous special events.
For information about both festivals, call the Taos County Chamber of
Commerce at 758-3873.
